🍕 PIZZERIA OF THE WEEK: ANGELO’S PIZZERIA & RISTORANTE
Angelo's Pizzeria and Ristorante in Hernando is one of my Florida Pizza Destinations and, in my opinion, one of the best pizzerias in the state. It’s a place I’ve returned to repeatedly, and I recently stopped in with group member George to kick off National Pizza Month.

There’s a family story behind the restaurant. The Rizzolo family’s roots trace back to Palermo, Sicily, and Angelo’s has been serving Citrus County since 1996. That gives them 30 years of bringing their family’s Italian cooking traditions to our community, with a menu that reaches well beyond pizza.

Their Margherita is one of my favorites in Florida. Angelo’s takes its own approach, building it around a tomato pie with house sauce, then finishing it with creamy stracciatella, extra-virgin olive oil, balsamic glaze and fresh basil. The tomato flavor takes center stage, while the stracciatella adds richness and the basil brings freshness. It’s a pizza I’ve written about before and continue coming back for.

Angelo’s also gives you plenty of reasons to explore beyond that favorite. They offer New York, Sicilian, Grandma and Detroit styles, and my visits have included everything from a classic cheese pizza to their different pan pizzas. I love having that variety right here in Citrus County. Their kitchen also highlights imported flour, California tomatoes, extra-virgin olive oil and fresh basil.

They’ve been part of our group’s story, too, hosting our first-anniversary celebration back when we were Pizza Lovers of Citrus County. That makes Angelo’s a place where we’ve shared both great pizza and memories as a community.

That combination of family history, variety, a Margherita that keeps bringing me back, and a connection to our group makes Angelo’s Pizzeria & Ristorante our Pizzeria of the Week.

🍕 SUPER SARDO’S PIZZA • LARGO, FLORIDA
A huge 19-inch cheese pizza for $19.50, a fantastic bake, and according to their social media, an owner with enough personality to keep you entertained while you eat. My visit to Sardo's Pizza & Pasta in Largo was quite enjoyable!

Let’s start with the pizza, because this thing was HUGE. I thought it was a great value, especially with the quality of the bake.

This was a very cheesy pizza, with a little chew to the cheese. I believe it's advertised as Grande… The sauce took more of a supporting role. I generally enjoy a slightly saucier pizza, but what was there tasted very good.

The bake was my favorite part. Great crisp, beautiful char, and a crust cooked exactly how I like it. Watch the video and look at the underside and those darker spots around the edge.

Despite the size and all that cheese, the slice held its shape. The bottom had the crisp I wanted, while the crust still offered a good chew. No screen used!

The man behind the business is Santo Sardo, a second-generation pizzeria owner whose experience started in his family’s shop at just five years old. He moved to Florida with his family in 1979, worked in their Seminole pizzerias, later returned to Brooklyn to operate his own place, and eventually came back to Florida. He opened a neighborhood pizzeria in the old Seminole Mall in 1995 and purchased the current Ulmerton Road building in 2007. There are decades of family experience behind this pizza.

I was hoping to meet him, but sadly he wasn't in tonight. From his posts, Santo is a CHARACTER. Personable, entertaining, and clearly comfortable making the entire visit part of the experience. The Brooklyn identity is right there in the branding: “I AM BROOKLYN.”

Even the signs have personality. One in my video reads, “Limit TWO (2) Napkins Per Person.” 😂

There’s also a meaningful story behind his community work. Santo established the Stella Marie Foundation in memory of his late sister, a survivor of the September 11 attacks who later died from breast cancer shortly after becoming a mother. The foundation organizes holiday bicycle and toy drives for children in need. An April 2026 feature reported that the restaurant collected and distributed more than 330 bicycles the previous year. That is a tremendous contribution to local families.

Huge pizza, plenty of cheese, great crisp, good chew, beautiful char, and the structure to hold it all together. Add Santo’s personality and the charitable work behind the business, and this was a visit I really enjoyed.

A PIZZA STOP TUCKED INSIDE THE LEHIGH ACRES EAGLES BUILDING!
My Southwest Florida pizza adventures brought me to Giovanni’s Takeout Express in Lehigh Acres, owned by local food personality Garrett, aka The Fat Cowboy.

It’s tucked inside the Eagles building, but you do NOT need to be an Eagles member to order from Giovanni’s!

I tried the cheese slices, and the crust had an airy cornicione and very thin profile. I've NEVER said this before, but portions of the bake was probably TOO well done 🔥 🔥 🔥 for me 😂.

Only portions had a little bitterness but I'm assuming Garrett was making them based on my normal preference, which is past well done. I certainly appreciate the attempt.

I very much enjoyed the sauce, and I believe I saw cans of Stanislaus Alta Cucina, which are excellent tomatoes.

🍕 Slices available daily from noon to 4 p.m.

I enjoy finding tucked-away pizzerias like this and sharing what the experience was actually like. Florida’s pizza scene reaches well beyond the storefronts you see along the main road, and Giovanni’s is another option to know about if you’re exploring Lehigh Acres. I'll certainly give them another visit in the future.
